Post-Gynecomastia Surgery Care
Use of Compression Girdle
- After surgery, using a special compression girdle or garment is essential to reduce swelling, prevent fluid accumulation, and help the skin tighten.
- Usually, the girdle must be worn for 4 to 6 weeks, and in the first weeks, it should be worn around the clock (24 hours a day).
Rest and Activity Restrictions
- In the first few days, get plenty of rest and avoid any heavy activity.
- Avoid lifting objects heavier than 2 to 5 kg for 4 to 6 weeks.
- Avoid activities that require raising arms above the head during the first week.
Mobility and Walking
- To reduce the risk of blood clots in the legs, take short, frequent walks around the house.
- Avoid absolute bed rest, but do not engage in heavy activities until approved by the doctor.
Wound Care and Showering
- Avoid getting the wound site wet for 3 days and change dressings according to the doctor's instructions.
- Usually, 1 to 2 days after surgery, with the doctor's approval, you can shower with lukewarm water.
- After showering, gently pat the surgical site dry without rubbing.
Pain and Swelling Control
- Swelling and bruising are normal in the first few days and usually subside over a few weeks.
- Use cold compresses in the first 48 hours to reduce swelling (never place ice directly on the skin).
- Take prescribed painkillers as directed and avoid self-medicating with aspirin or ibuprofen.
Sleeping Position
- In the first few weeks, sleep on your back and avoid sleeping on your side or stomach.
- To reduce swelling, keep your head and upper body elevated with several pillows above body level.
Return to Work and Activity
- Most patients can return to non-physical work after 3 to 7 days.
- Returning to physical and heavy work usually takes 2 to 3 weeks.
Return to Exercise
- Light exercises such as walking and gentle cycling are usually permitted after 3 to 4 weeks.
- Postpone upper body exercises and heavy sports for at least 4 to 6 weeks.
Massage and Scar Care
- Gentle massage of the surgical area can usually begin after one week with the doctor's approval.
- To reduce scarring, after the wound has fully healed, use silicone tape and cream.
- Protect suture sites from direct sunlight for at least one year.
Smoking Prohibition
- Avoid smoking cigarettes, hookah (shisha), and nicotine-containing products for at least 2 weeks after surgery.
- Nicotine reduces blood flow and delays the healing process.
Warning Signs
Contact your doctor immediately if you observe the following:
- Fever and chills.
- Unusual redness and warmth in the surgical area.
- Purulent or foul-smelling discharge from the wound.
- Sudden increase in swelling or bleeding.
Sensation Changes and Final Result
- Numbness, tingling, or changes in sensation in the nipple area and chest skin after surgery are normal and usually improve over a few months.
- The final result of the surgery is usually apparent 3 to 6 months after the operation, during which time swelling gradually subsides and the chest shape stabilizes.
Final Note: Gynecomastia surgery requires strict adherence to post-operative instructions, especially regarding the compression girdle and avoiding heavy activities, to ensure the best aesthetic and health outcome.
